The US-based enterprise Waymo has declared that its autonomous vehicles will be on offer for hire on London's thoroughfares beginning next year.

London will become the inaugural European city to host an self-driving taxi service, akin to those currently operational in multiple US cities and several American urban centers employing Waymo's cutting-edge technology.

Waymo confirmed that its fleet are now en route to London and will begin operating on the capital's streets in the next few weeks with safety drivers in control.
The company – initially formed as a spin-off from Google's autonomous vehicle program and belonging to the Alphabet family – stated it would expand services and work closely with the UK transport authorities and London's transport agency to obtain the required licenses to provide fully autonomous trips by 2026.

Additional companies, such as Uber and the UK-based technology firm Wayve, have likewise declared their own strategies to pilot self-driving taxis in the capital next year.
This follows the government officials confirming it would fast-track regulations enabling real-world tests to take place before regulation allowing self-driving vehicles becomes law in full.

Waymo currently has connections to Britain after launching its first European research base in Oxford in 2019.
The company is also launching operations in Tokyo using JLR eco-friendly cars, marking its sole additional current operation outside the United States.

Despite some concerning incidents, Waymo stated that statistics demonstrated that vehicles operated by humans were linked to crashes that injured people on foot at a much higher rate than its driverless fleet.
