The global fast-food chain has pulled a holiday advertisement made with AI after receiving considerable criticism on social media.

The short spot was created via AI-generated video and was initially uploaded on the YouTube channel for the Dutch branch of McDonald's on 6 December.

Audience Criticism and Decision to Pull

Soon after it aired, viewers on social media denounced the implementation of AI in the commercial. Several called it "disturbing" and "jarringly assembled".

"This incident represents an important lesson as we examine the appropriate utilization of AI," commented a representative from McDonald's Netherlands.

The commercial was developed for McDonald's by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop. It depicted a series of things that might go awry over the holidays, with the slogan "not the most wonderful time of the year".

The Phenomenon of AI-Generated Ads

Commercials that include AI-created content have emerged as a growing phenomenon among prominent corporations, particularly for the holiday campaign season.

  • Another beverage giant has also launched consecutive AI-generated holiday ads.
  • Technical Challenges: Because clips produced with current AI video tools are susceptible to degrade the longer they run, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be roughly short in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also sparked worries about automation in the advertising industry, with some commenters pointing out it could affect work for production staff.

Defense from the Production Company

Following the video's removal, a producer's CEO, Melanie Bridge, stood by the project.

She stated, the development required "over a month and a half" and involved producing "thousands of takes" which were then crafted in post-production "just as we would on any high-craft production".

"This wasn't an AI trick," Bridge asserted. "We consider it a proper commercial."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the McDonald's commercial was mostly panned, the reception for some AI-generated campaigns has been varied.

For instance, a recent AI-generated holiday ad from another major brand according to analysis received a significant "positive sentiment rating" from the public.

However, other businesses have also faced scrutiny for employing the technique in their campaigns. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that some called "cheap" and "disturbing".

The episode underscores the ongoing discussion within the marketing and production industries about the balance between AI efficiency and human craftsmanship.
