Navigating the Detailed Lore of the Popular Series' Campaign 4: A Comprehensive Overview

Critical Role's fourth campaign ventures into the fresh world of this new domain, a landscape remarkably changed from the established previous setting where past adventures unfolded. Within this world, the gods met their end by humanity just 70 years ago, sorcery becomes unpredictable, and society must determine how to manage themselves absent godly guidance.

The Realm of This New Adventure

If Exandria exemplifies a realm defined by deities, the current setting is marked by their complete absence. Within recent history, the Shapers' War unfolded, and people destroyed the final of the Gods. With the seven lords of creation now gone, people were forced to adapt independently in a transformed reality, filled with wild arcane forces and instability.

The main location for the first installment is Dol-Makjar, located on the east side of a territory known as Kahad. The settlement highly regards the revolutionary heroes of the defining battle. Monuments of these heroes extend from the walls of the community, confronting nearby peaks like they're holding them back.

While Dol-Makjar serves as our starting point, multiple additional locations are referenced throughout the narrative. The first is the Rookery, evidently the more artistic area of the city, where musicians, poets, thespians, and everything in between dwell. It's in this area that we spend the majority of the episode during the first episode. Additionally the dramatic space, this particular establishment, resides.

Beyond the territory exists an additional community called Dol-Rungja, though what is important regarding this place has yet to be explained.

Tir Cruthu constitutes the land of the fairies and a mysterious place outside mortal existence. Apparently this magical domain is gone, however, and the gateway to the magical dimension is shut. The meaning regarding this event remains disclosed, but it does seem to impact Thimble, who is beginning to age since becoming separated from that dimension.

Finally, there is the Mournvale, a land remote from the main city and the place an individual and a religious order live. It appears the realm of elven folk, but again, many aspects continue to be unknown currently.

The Narrative of Campaign 4

The plot starts in the community of the mountain city. During the opening of the episode, the city's inhabitants are gathered for a crucial gathering: the putting to death of the central figure. According to the official, the character will be put to death for acting as "a betrayer, arcanist, assassin, and obvious insurrection against the settlement and its people." This individual previously a war hero, but now he is seen as a lawbreaker by the governing body to the leadership group.

At Thjazi's execution, multiple various individuals with relationships to him assemble to witness. These are our main cast for the story, consisting of Azune Nayar, Occtis Tachonis, Thaisha Lloy, Halandil Fang, Thimble, Murray Mag'nesson, a seventh character, an eighth individual, a ninth person, a tenth character, Bolaire Lothaire, Kattigan Vale and Vaelus. Some of these characters attempt to rescue the condemned man; though, the rescue doesn't work and he is executed.

This event initiates the narrative of this adventure, but each aspect is tightly connected to the recent history of the setting of this universe. Seventy years prior to present circumstances, after the great conflict with the final deity being slain, mortalkind needed to confront the issue: what now? Sorcery quickly grew wild and unpredictable lacking divine beings around, and the question about where the souls of departed people go, since deities are no longer available to guide them to the beyond, still has yet to be answered.

Predictably, people banded together and started constructing their civilization fresh. Nevertheless, unsurprisingly, certain individuals agreed with what this new world would look like. Although information remains extensive details regarding the War of Axe and Vine, it gets referenced multiple instances in the first episode, and this individual was seen as a military legend after that war concluded. Nevertheless, two years later, he initiated the Falconer's Rebellion against the Sundered Houses of Dol-Makjar. The motivation is still explained, but considering that Thjazi mentions that the ruling clans "are stronger than ever", it's reasonable to conclude two things: the uprising didn't succeed and the families' control continues to be complete in the community of Dol-Makjar.

Additionally, with sorcery functioning unpredictably, it appears to be managed and carefully monitored. Pretty different from arcane practices are viewed in a much more positive light in Exandria.

The Characters of This Adventure

Alongside the primary characters, we're introduced to multiple significant NPCs in the city of Dol-Makjar.
