Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Chief Executive Steps Down Following Shift Into Fried Chicken.
The head of Domino's Pizza Group who proposed the United Kingdom might have hit pizza saturation while diversifying the company into chicken products has been removed after conflicts with its board.
Leadership Transition
Andrew Rennie is exiting after a brief tenure in the top role, and will be replaced on an interim basis by the company's chief operating officer, Nicola Frampton, while the pizza giant seeks a long-term chief.
Rennie, who worked for Domino's for more than two decades, had aimed to redirect Britain's biggest pizza food delivery firm towards chicken offerings, remarking earlier this month there was not “massive growth” left in the British pizza industry. He said poultry was the fastest-growing menu item in the globe.
Governance Tensions
Reports indicate that there was disagreement between Rennie and the directors over his strategy and business vision, although the company's announcement said he was stepping down “by mutual agreement”.
Recent Brand Introduction
In the autumn, the chain launched its Chick 'N' Dip product line – which the former chief referred to as a “major strategic shift” for the group – and is piloting it in 210 outlets in the north-west of England and the province.
While the company is still intending to launch it across its almost 1,400 stores in the coming year as scheduled, it views chicken products as a supplement for its core pizza business.
Leadership Comment
Ian Bull, the company chairman, commented: “Directors think that there are a range of possibilities to enhance value and profitability in the main pizza segment. We are concentrating on identifying the ideal CEO to direct the systematic rollout of that development approach.”
Industry Difficulties
Recently, Domino's, which has millions of users in the UK and Ireland, said orders fell by 1.5 percent in the latest quarter. In August, it cautioned that the takeaway market had “grown more challenging” as it blamed weaker consumer confidence in the lead-up to the government announcement and higher payroll outlays for disappointing revenue and a 15 percent decline in six-month income.
Rival chains are also facing challenges. Pizza Hut disclosed the closure of multiple locations a last month, after the firm behind its British operations faced financial collapse.
Health Initiatives
Trying to keep up with market shifts towards balanced diets, Domino's has rolled out lower-calorie items, such as its thin-crust selection of pizzas below 400 kcals as well as vegan and allergy-friendly pizzas. A large pepperoni pizza has 2,311 kcals. A family cheese pizza has 2,171, while a personal has under 1,000 calories.
Acting Management
Nicola Frampton has been with the company since 2021, and previously worked for the betting firm a well-known operator. It is understood that she is not seeking to take on the top job on a full-time basis.
Frampton stated: “Our team has a several active expansion and performance initiatives that we will be dedicated to carrying out at a rapid rate.”
She added these included further work on the company's supply chain and product development, and its rewards program.
The pizza chain is also in need of a long-term finance director until 16 March, when Andy Andrea starts from the Irish cider and beer maker a well-known firm. Until then, Richard Snow acts as interim finance chief.
