2026 Dubbed the Era of the Frog Game.
My key observation from the recent indie games event was highly engaging, my primary conclusion was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Considering a collection of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Croaking characters are anything but new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. However, their visibility has markedly exploded in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an absolute deluge of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are serious Frog Games.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To quantify this phenomenon, I performed a deep dive into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The data tell a compelling story: a steady increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is also apparent elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the explosion in gaming seems uniquely strong.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
Frankly, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs have inherent appealing traits for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues facilitate a wide array of innovative control schemes.
Many of the announced projects smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.
Should these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be entering a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
